Day 11 of 90 Updated daily

The Capacity Experiment

Over-functioners don't need more discipline. They need room to achieve. So I'm putting it to the test, in public.

A six pack. $50k in coaching. Both by my birthday on January 24, and I've got 90 days to do it.

I might miss both. You'll see it either way.

What would you go after if you finally had the room? Pick one goal. I'll coach you through 90 days, starting February 1.

Why I'm doing this

HOT 75 was so much fun.

Not because of the results, though y'all, I lost 42 pounds in 75 days. It was fun because I never once felt like I was suffering. Nothing felt too hard.

Were there habits I kept that I won't keep for the rest of my life? Of course. But I had the capacity to do them in that moment, and I knew they weren't going to hurt me later.

That's the part I want past dieters to see. You can do hard things. You just need the capacity to do them.

I've been at capacity plenty of times. I know I'm there when the workouts, the cooking and the tracking I used to do every single day suddenly feel impossible. Too hard. Too overwhelming.

For years I didn't have words for it. I couldn't explain why some seasons felt easy and others felt almost impossible. Most people think that's a motivation problem, or a determination problem. It isn't. It's capacity.

And if your capacity is low right now? That's okay. It's not a life sentence. We can solve that. But we have to solve it the right way. Another diet is just a band-aid. The real fix is your capacity.

So I'm doing it again. Except this time, I'm doing two things.

Last time was one goal. This time it's a six pack and $50k in coaching, at the same time. Two hard things. Connected, but both big.

Because why not? Why not have a big life? A big opportunity to go after every goal you've been putting off?

Is it scary to do this in public? Absolutely. I might fail. I might look really dumb for trying this hard and missing.

That's okay. If this inspires even one person to check in on their capacity, see where they're at, and figure out what they need to finally reach the goals they've had for so long, the cringe is worth it.

Let's find out what's possible.

Daily log

One honest moment a day, newest first

Day 10 · Wednesday, Nov 4

Now that the elections are over, we have more stress coming: the holidays. This is where I've failed in years past. So to counteract that, I'm using the extra capacity I have now to set up the plans I'm going to need come holiday time.

Day 9 · Tuesday, Nov 3

High-stress times are a capacity killer. Elections are a good example. The unknown of what might happen can make people feel anxious and out of control. I chose to limit political coverage, do my civic duty and then move on with the day so I wouldn't lose capacity.

Day 8 · Monday, Nov 2

I read a quote I really liked from Leo Tolstoy: "...for a man walking a thousand miles it is absolutely necessary to set aside his final goal and to say to himself each morning: 'Today I will walk twenty-five miles to a resting place and sleep,' and during each day's journey reaching that resting place eclipses his ultimate goal and becomes his sole focus." It reminded me that capacity isn't about the 90-day challenge. It's about daily capacity: the moments every day when we choose which direction we're headed. Sometimes we walk 25 miles and sometimes it's only 2. But as long as we're moving in the right direction, we're going to make it.

Day 7 · Sunday, Nov 1

Sundays are my dedicated recovery day. Everyone should have one, and if you don't have one yet, we need to meet so we can create a schedule that includes one!

Day 6 · Saturday, Oct 31

With it being a holiday, I wasn't spending as much time specifically on my goals. But this capacity experiment is about building a life I love, and that means sometimes we get to make choices for fun right now rather than waiting for the perfect moment.

Day 5 · Friday, Oct 30

I felt a bit lower today. Not sure why, but as long as it's not a long-term pattern, I don't worry about an off day. I did what I could and kept looking to have more conversations.

Day 4 · Thursday, Oct 29

Today was a reminder of why I do this. It was so fun to be on a call with my community clients, helping them solve real problems. Of course the solution isn't as easy as me telling them what to do, but it starts with talking about their capacity and then making a plan from there.

Day 3 · Wednesday, Oct 28

I'm struggling to get people to join the waitlist. I use things like that as data. I need to change up my process moving forward. Of course I want it to go better, but we're not there yet.

Day 2 · Tuesday, Oct 27

There's always a moment at the beginning of a diet or other challenge when you get whiplash. From one day to the next, it feels like you have to change everything. That whiplash moment came early, and I had a bit of a freak-out. I expected this to be easier, and right from the beginning I've challenged myself. But that's good. I've got the capacity to keep going. I'm not overextending myself, because I know those big emotions are just signs that I'm bringing up my own limitations. And because I have a reservoir of capacity, I don't need to worry that this is going to make me ruin this challenge on day two.

Day 1 · Monday, Oct 26

I felt nervous. It's scary to do something in public, and I was telling myself it would be embarrassing to fail in front of everyone. But this is about building the capacity to do hard things. It's okay to feel uncomfortable. It's going to keep helping my capacity grow.
